We talk a great deal about how essential a healthy mouth is for good nutrition and for overall health. I think sometimes we overlook one extremely important aspect in this discussion, and this is the psychological benefits of having a nice smile.
Take a look at the 2 photos of this young lady. Note that in one of the pictures she is smiling but her lips are closed so her teeth are not showing. Then observe the second image in which she is smiling with her lips relaxed and her teeth in full view.
As a dentist I am especially tuned into people's faces, especially their smiles. You may think that this is an "occupational hazard", but i will quickly point out to you that even though you and others you meet do not have this same "affliction", I can assure you that with EVERYONE, consciously or not, when they first meet someone else, the first thing they look at (perhaps second to the eyes) is the person's smile.
The significance of this is huge! Think about when you meet a new person for the first time...think about when you attend a business meeting...think about when you are at a social gathering...think about when you go on a job interview...In each and every one of these instances, realize that your smile is the first aspect of you that is being registered by everyone who you meet.
Here are a few quotes from some pretty well known people about smiles: . “Because of your smile, you make life more beautiful.” – Thich Nhat Hanh
“A smiling face is a beautiful face. A smiling heart is a happy heart.”– Dr. T.P.Chia
Life is like a mirror. Smile at it and it smiles back at you.” – Peace Pilgrim
“Your smile will give you a positive countenance that will make people feel comfortable around you.”
“Nothing you wear is more important than your smile.”
“Smile! It increases your face value.”
“Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” – Mother Teresa
